Determination of Carbon Steel Bar Diameter by Nondestructive Magnetic Testing

Carbon steel is an important component in reinforced concrete structures. These composite materials are susceptible to various degradation processes, especially the corrosion of bars. Since they play role stability structures, these structures require periodic inspections verify their physical conditions. Therefore, a nondestructive testing technique proposed that based on electromagnetic induction, which capable discriminating diameters This was simulated with COMSOL Multiphysics software and experimentally tested laboratory. Magnetic hysteresis loops were obtained for bars 5.0, 6.3, 8.0, 10.0 mm at 0, 10, 20 depths sinusoidal triangular excitation fields. The results from maximum values field, remanence, coercivity processed by principal analysis, Karhunen–Loéve transformation, Gaussian classifier, artificial neural network. confusion matrices produced pattern recognition techniques analyzed, show method can distinguish different bar diameters, but limited depth.
